McKINNEY, TX - A man who police say opened fire on the McKinney Police Department around 9 a.m. Tuesday is dead after a shootout with officers. Now police say the man tried unsuccessfully to detonate a homemade bomb just minutes before he opened fire.

McKinney Police say 29-year-old Patrick Gray Sharp drove a Ford F-150 pickup pulling a trailer filled with woodchips, road flares, gasoline, and ammonium nitrade to the public safety building at the police station on Taylor Burk Drive. Police say Sharp then set fire to the truck, but the trailer failed to ignite. Sharp then started yelling before he opened fire with an assault rifle on the public safety building. Police returned fire until the man fled on foot. Police found him approximately 200 yards from the police station dead. It is unclear whether he died from officer gunfire or self-inflicted gunshots.

Police said they could not confirm if there are any other suspects, but that no officers, personnel, or anyone else was injured. Nearby schools Collin County Community College and a McKinney elementary school were put on lockdown Tuesday morning, but that has since been lifted. Collin County Community College officials say bullets from the shooting entered a Collin County Community College-Central Park Campus building, shattering 23 windows. No students, faculty or staff were injured. Police said since it is a highly populated area a bomb squad was also called in and found no other threats.

Police said at a press conference later Tuesday afternoon that Sharp lived near Anna, Texas. Inside his home investigators found more weapons and ammunition.

Police say they are still investigating any possible motives Sharp may have had.
