DURANT, OK - A local company added dozens of temporary jobs and at the same time is helping to rebuild Fort Hood. Icon Construction and the City of Durant partnered up, as the company works quickly to replace critical rehabilitation units and medical facilities that were damaged in November by the Fort Hood shooter.
Icon Construction is one of the leading modular unit manufacturers in Texas, and its employees are used to constructing barracks and offices for the military. Steven Ingram has been doing electrical work at Icon for the past three years.
"You have to do it, everything military. I mean everything is very specific in what they want. You have guidelines you have to meet and if it's not good enough then they don't want it,” said Ingram.
But this current job for Fort Hood is different, because instead of office space, they’re building medical buildings.
"This is clinical space, this is real live, see a doctor, see a therapist, have medical treatment space,” said Icon Construction President, James Bell, III.
About five months ago, the Army Corps of Engineers came to Icon Construction with a request to build 18 new critical rehabilitation and medical facilities as fast as they could. And as of Thursday, they will be ready to ship out to Fort Hood in one week.
"From concept to the army to being able to move into them and take advantage of the facilities is an extremely short, compressed period of time, so we're able to get the best services and therapy for our soldiers coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Bell.
The additional work load also meanstmore workers are needed to get the job done. That’s where the City of Durant joined forces with Icon to hire more local employees.
"We ended up increasing production, increasing staff 50%” said Bell.
As for the guys working diligently through the summer heat, they're proud that they can do their part to help out at Fort Hood.
"When I am given an opportunity to help them get out of what they themselves call ‘undesirable facilities’ into something that they're going to be more comfortable, I am extremely proud of that opportunity and jump at the chance to do it,” said Bell.
The medical buildings will help the military treat soldiers for combat injuries, post traumatic stress disorder and provide physical therapy
