GRAYSON CO., TX—Democratic candidate for governor, Bill White, made several stops throughout Grayson County, Thursday.

He started in Denison at the Rotary Club and finished at the Grayson County College campus.

Bill White spoke to a room full of community members, many with affiliations to local schools.

He explained that more rural areas, like some parts of North Texas, have been hit hard by cutbacks to certain programs.

"We need to do a better job of vocational and technical education. The state top, down mandates for the school boards, have resulted in our vocational and technical programs, deteriorating," White, said.

Tony Beaverson with the Democratic Party of Grayson County, helped organize the event. He said White understands the exact needs of young people in this area.

"It's really important that we get back to an understanding that there are jobs, other than college educated," Beaverson, said.

Representatives from current governor, Rick Perry's office, say he's already proven through his time in office how important he thinks those same topics are.

"He's unveiled several policies that he believes will continue to strengthen our education system. Those include expanding our stem academies. Those are academies that focus on science, technology engineering and math, to help prepare Texas students for a competitive workforce once they graduate from high school," Catherine Frazier, with the group, Texans for Rick Perry, said.

White finished up his day in Grayson County, also proposing changes he'd like to address dealing with the high drop-out rate.

He says he hopes to implement better connections between schools and employers, offering dual credits for students who are forced to work.

He’d also like to implement a statewide program, similar to the one he launched in Houston, which encourages schools to contact each individual student who does not return to class.
