WOODVILLE,OK -- Flames raged through a rural community Friday evening. No one was seriously injured by the fire in eastern Marshall County, but a handful of buildings are destroyed. Shelby Levins reports.
More than 20 firefighters worked to battle the flames that tore through Woodville, Oklahoma. The fire sparked some time before 5:30pm. It destroyed four vacant mobile homes, along with two travel trailers, and knocked out power to the area.
"I looked out at the scene, the flames were clear up over the trailers - it was burning everywhere over there,” James Honaker explained.
Honaker could only watch as fire consumed his neighbors property.
Firefighters and their tanker trucks packed French Ave., in the normally quiet community of Woodville.
"It's the most people I've seen over here period, since I've lived here,” Honaker said.
About two dozen volunteer firefighters from three departments worked to put out the flames.
"When I arrived on the scene you couldn't even see the houses because of the smoke and the fire - we had no idea what we were up against because everything down here was on fire,” Chief Jere Zimmerman of the Texoma Volunteer Fire Dept. said.
Firefighters say the four mobile homes destroyed were vacant, as were the two travel trailers. At least 6 acres also burned.
All the property is said to belong to one owner who doesn't live on the land.
And all the firefighters who worked to keep the flames from spreading to other homes - are volunteers.
"Without the volunteer firefighters - this place would be gone, there would be no houses here,” Chief Zimmerman said.
Five firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion - but EMS says everyone was released on scene.
The fire also damaged a power pole, which temporary cut out power to the whole neighborhood.
"We worked quickly to restore power as much as we can. We still have about 10 people off right now,” Toby Underwood, a REA service man said.
Honaker is just thankful power poles and vacant homes were the only things destroyed.
"That the worst fire I've seen around it period. It was bad,” Honaker said.
UPDATE: Firefighters say a neighboring burning an un-attended trash pile sparked the fire. They say it will be up to the landowner if any charges will be presse.
