SHERMAN, TX -- Some strong storms moved through Grayson County Monday evening, leaving many people, including KXII, in the dark. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, but as of 10:00 p.m. Monday, about 1,200 people were still without power.

Oncor officials saying it could be noon Tuesday before power is restored to some residents, but their crews will work throughout the night.

Around 4:55 pm, the wind picked up, gusting at speeds of up to 48 miles per hour here at the KXII studios, but the National Weather Service estimated winds as high as 70 mph, based on radar data.

Most damage reports came from the Texoma Parkway North Loy Lake Road area in Sherman. Wind and blowing rain made visibility nearly impossible outside the KXII studios, just before losint power for just about two and a half hours.

Oncor reports at one point in time, 3,200 customers lost power, including many on Loy Lake Road, after several utility poles snapped. Police and fire crews responded to secure the scene, and keep people from driving over live wires.

Traffic lights were also knocked out, including all the lights at Loy Lake and Highway 82. Loy Lake was completely shut down between 82 and Gallagher. Power poles were also damaged along Texoma Parkway near Grand Avenue.

"High winds, heavy rains, debris flying everywhere, light polls falling over," said Southside Barbeque owner Steve Lewis.

Just north of the damage on Loy Lake, on FM 691 in Denison, the Red Cross's HAM radio tower snapped and fell over due to high winds.

The tower, which is about 50 feet tall, fell onto power lines connected to the Red Cross building. Denison Fire Department responded to make sure the building was safe, then ONCOR electric came out to cut off power so the tower could be taken apart and moved.

"Heard sort of a crack and then a thump and then I could not imagine what it was, I was looking to see if the trees around here might have been affected and then I opened the doors to the side and then there it was in the middle of the parking lot," said Red Cross Director Sharon Watson.

While the tower at KXII withstood the winds, the station fell victim to the power outages across the area. Staffers used flashlights and cell phones and worked to report the news in the dark. While our over-the-air signal was off for around 2 and a half hours, our web channel KXII-dot-com remained online and updated throughout the evening.
