MILBURN, OK—For the second year in a row, Windstream Communications is sponsoring an on-line contest, to give schools some financial support.
Two separate categories were offered this year, and schools from 20 states were eligible to enter.
Milburn High School is one of 30 finalists vying for a $5,000 Spirit Award.
While the students may be constantly moving and changing, teachers say the technology is not.
Shanelle Baxter instructs business and computer classes and says, "My students were learning on XP, and then going to the state level, and trying to do the same thing with office 2007. It was really causing a lot of problems."
Baxter is also the leader of the school’s, Business Professionals of America Club.
She created the video, that's currently listed as one of 30 finalists, for a $5,000 scholarship.
"We're a small school,” she said, “and we need every, and any vote we can get. Some of the larger districts obviously have the advantage."
Windstream Communications is sponsoring the contest that will award the top 10 of 30 schools with money, to spend however they'd like.
Mike Beggs with Windstream Communications, said, "Because we are a much smaller company, we really do try to engage the communities that we're in. Most of the people that work for Windstream, in Oklahoma, also live in the towns, so to get people to engage doesn't take a lot of effort; most people want to do it."
Baxter would like to purchase a new projector for graduation ceremonies, and she says updated software and computers would help her students learn more efficiently.
The superintendent agrees, and said at the rate technology is moving, it can sometimes be difficult, for smaller schools to keep up.
"If it's two years old, it's almost out of date, so anytime we can update computers, scanners, whatever it may be, that gives us a leg up on other schools, and producing students that are able to go out into the work force and hold down better jobs," Superintendent Jon Holmes, said.
On-line voting is open until September 7th.
