CALERA, OK – A Calera woman watched in disbelief on Friday as the metal building she was using as home was transformed into a new home for free. It’s all thanks to a caring neighbor and the company he works for.
"It's just like I couldn't believe it, it's too good to be true, I always had to work so hard to get anything,” said Miss Jane, as she prefers to be called.
Jane was living in metal building with no air conditioning in Calera, OK.
"It had to be real terrible, and I visited her a couple of times when the temperature was over a hundred degrees and it was unbearable in the house,” said her neighbor, Mike Stoica.
It was supposed to be a temporary home, but Jane fell on hard times. She not only cares for her elderly mother, but is a cancer survivor and has multiple health problems. She said because money got tight, the metal building became permanent.
So Stoica, told his boss, who owns Icon Construction in Durant, about Jane's situation. He immediately donated all supplies to turn her metal building into a real home.
"And I've known all along that Mike and Jane were good neighbors, but when they came up with this, it was too good to be true,” said Jane.
Stoica said a project like this is very personal to him and the employees at Icon.
"One of the guys told me, a little while ago, ‘I hope Miss Jane doesn't start crying because I'm going to cry too.’ It's just one of those things,” he said.
The 14 guys started work Friday morning, and will be finished with the new rooms by Saturday. They’re all working for free.
"This is their day off, today and tomorrow… And no hesitation from nobody,” said Stoica.
As Jane stands by and watches the men work, she can hardly believe her eyes. Though she can't pay for any of it, she hopes to be able to pay it forward someday.
"You know you may not give it back to the same person but maybe I can give it back to somebody else,” said Jane.
Icon Construction said a project like this would normally cost about $15,000 to $20,000. But they're happy to help a local resident like Miss Jane for nothing at all. Icon also reaches out to military families and Jane has several children and relatives in the service as well.
