DENISON, TX - Emergency crews responded to the Jenson Dormitory at Grayson County College, where a power pole was blown onto the back end of the structure just after 12:30 p.m.. We're told the dorm is without power at this time, and that no one was injured.
GCC officials tell us the power pole fell onto, not on top of, the back end of the Jenson Residence Hall. Jensen is located two miles from the main campus, on the GCC West Campus.
College officials are making accommodations so students affected will have a place to stay tonight. College officials say all scheduled classes at the college will go on as planned.
The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning just after 12:30 p.m. for Grayson County. Early reports state the main area affected is near the Grayson County Airport, where the First Weather Team says they've received reports of straight line winds of up to 70 miles per hour.
Chief meteorologist Steve LaNore says he's received 6 eyewitness reports of a small tornado that touched down near the airport, one of whom was interviewed by a KXII News Team. The National Weather Service is reporting it was straight line winds that rolled through the area, and not a tornado.
A door to the old Perrin Air Force Base museum was blown off of its hinges, and several people around the airport say they saw what they believe to be a tornado touch down briefly in the area..
There was one reported injury at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, where a construction trailer fell on a man in his fifties. We're told the man suffered minor injuries.
"If it would have gotten bigger we would have ran for it, but it just died out as it was heading south," eyewitness Laurel Holtmeyer said.
Power has yet to be restored to the dorm here, but Grayson County College officials tell us, If needed they will provide temporary shelter for the 80-or-so students living in the building, over at the main campus.
