Stewart: Ready for Prison

9-15-04 - NEW YORK (AP) Martha Stewart's lawyer says he'll continue to pursue her appeal, adding that Stewart has a "substantial" chance of winning. Stewart announced Wednesday that she wants to begin her five-month sentence "as soon as possible" and not wait until her appeal is decided. She said she wants to "reclaim" her life, and hopes to be home in time to plant a spring garden.

If the judge lifts the stay of her sentence, Stewart's case would be reviewed by prison officials. A prison would then be recommended; a process a prisons spokesman says usually takes "a couple weeks."

Stewart has said she hopes to serve her time at a minimum-security facility in Danbury, Connecticut, close to her home and to her 90-year-old mother.

Prison officials try to send inmates within 500 miles of home. That makes Danbury the most likely destination, followed by Alderson, West Virginia.
