DURANT, OK -- The heavy rains didn't stop volunteers in Durant from helping the hungry, or stop people from getting the assistance they need. Maddie Garrett has the full story on how a food bank is doing their part in Oklahoma's Hunger Action Month.
"I'm glad to get the help from the food banks, even in the rain."
It was wet, muddy and hard work distributing nearly 19,000 pounds of food and hygiene supplies at the Saint Williams Catholic Church in Durant.
"We opened up early at 12:30 because there's so many people standing out in the rain so we wanted to let them inside," said Marilyn Hitchcock, Food Bank Director.
It was the last day of Oklahoma Regional Food Bank's summer family program that focuses on helping children. A program that has saved Grandmother Sherry Glasscock more than once while raising her two grandchildren.
"They've helped me many many times if it wasn't for them sometimes my kids would probably go hungry," said Glasscock.
As food bank Director Marilyn Hitchcock moves box after heavy box, she gives hope to person after person, lined up for a little help.
"It's relieving to know that there are people in this country that still care about us," said Tommy Wright, a food box recipient.
Not only did nearly 100 people brave the weather to get a box or two of food and supplies.
"Evidently they need it you know, we were surprised we would have such a crowd," said Hitchcock.
But those on the receiving end also showed thanks for the hard work and donations of the volunteers.
"It shows me that their faith is with them at all times, rain, cold, hot, wet, it all goes together in the end."
And while this was the last distribution day for the family packs, the Regional Food Bank in Durant will get their regular shipment in next week and will give out that food three times a month on Wednesdays.
