ADA, OK -- Service dogs are commonly used to help people with a variety of medical conditions, from those with hearing and visual disabilities, to diabetics. But Thursday, one Ada women claimed she's being evicted from her apartment simply because she uses a service dog.
Sheena Stallings has suffered from non-epiliptic seizures all her life, and says her service dog is a medical need. But the apartment complex where Sheena lives has a strict no pet policy, and says if they don't receive proper medical documentation within the week, Sheena will be evicted.
Sheena Stallings says she got Angel three months ago to help keep her safe and alert others for help when she goes into a seizure.
"If I'm alone there is a very good chance I could hit my head. I could possibly die," Stallings said.
Sheena says when she first brought Angel to the apartment, Tanglewood Terrace threatened to evict her because of their no pet policy, but says after she provided the apartment manager with this physican's assistant's note stating the animal was used for a medical disability, she was told the dog could stay.
"She accepted the note and then everything was fine," Stallings said. "But according to them now I've never provided them with documentation."
The Tanglewood Terrace apartments declined to comment on camera, but their attorneys issued this statement stating that while the apartment will waive their no pet policy to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Sheena has failed to provide appropriate documentation to support her waiver request.
But Sheena says she was never told to provide documentation and even filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission.
"I was told the one time to get your dog out of here. I on my own provided the documentation then I filed the complaint and because we had come to an agreement I dropped the complaint," said Stallings.
Tanglewood Terrace says Sheena has until September 17th to provide them with proper documentation or she will be evicted. Sheena says she will comply with their request, but she still feels like the victim of discrimination.
"She just does so much good for me I don't understand why anyone would have such a problem with it," said Stallings.
