9-17-04 - A man who grew up in Marietta, Oklahoma is now in charge of one of the Army’s largest fighting forces. Major General James Thurman took over the Army’s 4th Infantry Division this summer.

His Aunt, Emma Bell Smith, still lives in the small, Love County town. She says her nephew has kept his small-town roots, despite rising to the top ranks of the military.

College friends like John Kennedy says, “ I knew he had the makings of a great leader just by his character, his honesty, his forthrightness."

They are qualities Major General Thurman says he learned growing up in Marietta. “It’s the values that were instilled in me as a young boy from many folks that had a positive influence on me."

The Major General has served in Iraq and Desert Storm – a military career that has spanned more than 30 years.
