Trucker Charged, Victims Named

Video will be available shortly.

9-21-04 – The ten people who died in a fiery three-vehicle wreck just south of Sherman have been identified and the driver of the semi-truck is in the Grayson County Jail.

Fire Captain Doug Blackburn says a tractor-trailer rig was northbound when it crossed the median and hit a pickup -- and then struck an SUV; shutting down the south bound lanes of 75 Monday night.

The victims riding in the SUV were identified as 32-year-old Lisa Martin, her 72-year-old mother Betsy Wood. Martin’s three children; Chance Martin, 4, Brock Martin 2, and Reid Martin, 6 weeks were also killed.

The father of those children saw earlier news reports and drove to Sherman, where he identified the victims as his family.

Five people who were in the pickup were killed, while two others were injured. Authorities say the victims in the truck appear to be Mexican nationals.

The dead have been identified as Manuel Esparza, 39, Marcos Esparza, 41, Hector Zapata, 33, Joel Ruiz, 36 and German Velazquez, 19.

Javier Esparza and Candelario Esparza are still at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

The tractor-trailer driver, Miroslaw Janusz Jozwiak was hurt and taken to Wilson N. Jones, then transferred to the Grayson County Jail. Jozwiak is a 45-year-old Polish native who lives in Daytona, Florida. Authorities say he does not speak much English.

He is charged with 10 counts of criminally negligent homicide. His bond is set for $2 million.
