Former Senator Stipe Recovering

9-21-04 - CLAREMORE, Okla. (AP) Former state Senator Gene Stipe is recovering from an apparent stroke. A family spokesman says 77-year-old Stipe suffered a stroke yesterday during a ceremony at Rogers State University.

He has been listed in stable condition.

Last month, Stipe completed six months of home detention as part of his sentence for his role in illegally funneling money to a congressional campaign.

Stipe admitted to funneling more than 245-thousand dollars into the failed 1998 congressional campaign of Walt Roberts and then trying to cover it up.

Stipe who served 53 years in the Oklahoma Legislature has had a series of medical problems.
