Tax Fight Underway

Video will be available shortly.

9-22-04 – A hotel-motel tax in Bryan County is at the center of a lawsuit. A group of Bryan County motel owners are trying to get a proposal removed from the November ballot.

The five percent tax would be split into fourths and divided among the Sheriff’s Department, the County Jail, the county communications system and tourism.

County commissioners voted in August to put the proposal on the ballot. An attorney for the motel owners says commissioners violated the state's Open Meeting Act by posting an incomplete agenda for the meeting.

The group claims the agenda was unclear and did not explain that a motel tax was up for consideration. The motel owners say they would have attended the meeting if they had known it would be discussed.

For now, the tax issue is still on the November 2nd ballot.
