SHERMAN, Texas (AP) - Transportation officials are re-evaluating
the policy for placing highway median barriers after ten people
died in a wreck south of Sherman.
No medians were in place during Monday's accident that killed five members of a McKinney family in an SUV. Their funerals are tomorrow.
Five people in a pickup also died.
The crash happened when a northbound 18-wheeler crossed the
Highway 75 median into oncoming traffic. The trucker is charged with ten counts of criminally negligent homicide.
The Texas Department of Transportation is re-evaluating its
policy on medians. Tex-Dot engineer Kevin Harris told the Dallas Morning News that the agency -- is about safety.
State guidelines call for highways with medians 30 feet wide or
smaller to get barriers. The median along Highway 75 in Sherman, with paved shoulders, stretches 43 to 45 feet.
