Theft Ring Busted in Texoma

Video will be available shortly.

9-28-04 - The investigation of a theft ring that crossed the nation landed right in the heart of Texoma this week.

Wapanucka police arrested William Newell on Tuesday. He’s wanted by police in Chicago as part of a massive theft ring that targeted everything from farm equipment to cars and stretched from California to Illinois.

Chief John Bynum got the call last week from a Chicago investigator. Through a money trail and phone records, Chicago police had traced Newell to the small Johnston County town.

Local police set up surveillance outside the home of Newell’s girlfriend Monday, and waited and watched through the night. By noon on Tuesday, they followed the pair in a car, where Newell surrendered.

Newell is being held in the Johnston County jail- and will be extradited to Chicago to face numerous burglary charges.
