9-30-04 - A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed Wednesday night after a defect in one of the car wheels. 20 cars filled with corn left the tracks near Dougherty, Oklahoma.

No one was hurt but it marks the third derailment in the past three months. The cause of this derailment was similar to a flat tire. But when the cars left the track it damaged the rails – crews spent most of Thursday making repairs.

BNSF says despite recent derailments, the trains and track are safer than in the past.

The derailment actually caused about twenty trains to be delayed, including Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer. Passengers were taken by to their destination instead.
