NAACP Pushing Hate Crime Law

Video will be available shortly.

ADA, Okla. (AP) - The NAACP is proposing a new hate crime law named after a black college student who was killed recently after a racially charged argument.

State NAACP President Miller Newman says Oklahoma's hate crime law is weak. The current hate crime law is a misdemeanor. Newman says he'll introduce the Tusan Resolution at the NAACP State Conference in Tulsa later this month. It would raise the punishment for a hate crime by one level.

It's named for Joseph Tusan, an East Central University student and football player killed last month. He was thrown from the bed of a pickup truck when it was rammed from behind by another truck.

Prosecutors have charged Ammon Reich, who is white, with
first-degree murder and nine counts of assault with a dangerous
weapon. The F-B-I is also investigating the incident.
