12-5-04 - Folks in Whitesboro honored a local World War II veteran and former prisoner of war on Sunday. The new Whitesboro Intermediate School gymnasium was named for Charles Baum.
Charles Baum returned home from war nearly sixty years ago and showed as much dedication in the community as he showed for his country.
In World War Two, Baum survived the Bataan Death March and is now one of only four living survivors. After the war, he came home to Whitesboro where he served as postmaster and then as a physical education teacher.
At the ceremony Sunday, hundreds of people gathered to dedicate the new gymnasium in Baum's honor. Congressman Ralph Hall spoke about Baum's dedication to his country and his patriotism.
