12-7-04 - Sherman's commercial trash issue could be headed to the voters. Commercial trash provider IESI submitted a petition this week for an initiative ordinance that would allow voters to choose whether Sherman can keep private companies from picking up trash in the city.
The petition’s signatures must first be validated by the city clerk, when has ten days to do so. If it’s valid, the city council has 60 days to set an election date.
City leaders have claimed in the past that IESI is deceiving people in order to gain signatures. The city claims if all city trash does not flow in the TASWA landfill that the city and the surrounding area will lose money. In the end, city leaders claim trash rates would likely rise.
