12-10-04 - An important recall for owners of Dodge Durango SUV's and Dakota pickup trucks from model years 2000 through 2003: the vehicles have potentially serious safety problems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a failing ball joint could cause the suspension to collapse and a wheel to fall off. Daimler-Chrysler had previously discounted the danger.
It says the ball joint problem has not caused any injury, and any failure would be preceded by a noise that would alert a driver.
In addition, the company is recalling nearly 72,000 Durangos in the 2004 model year. The government says a cable can short-circuit and cause a fire under the hood.
