More Flu Vaccine in Bryan/Grayson Counties

11-4-04 - The Bryan County Health Deparment received 900 doses of adult flu vaccine and 150 doses of vaccine for children 6 to 23 months. The doses are intended for people in the high-risk categories.

The department will distribute the adult vaccines at the Bryan County Community Building on Tuesday, November 9th from 8:30am to 4:00pm. Children will be given vaccines by appointment only at the health department.

Late on Thursday afternoon, the Grayson County Health Department received its shipment of preservative-free flu vaccine. This vaccine is reserved for babies ages 6 months to 23 months who are residents of Texas. Babies in this age group are all at high risk for complications from influenza illness, so the CDC has designated them as a priority group to receive flu shots no matter how healthy they are.

Parents can bring their babies to the Grayson County Health Department during regular immunization hours to get their flu shots. Flu shots are free for babies who are on Medicaid and whose parents bring their Medicaid cards. The shots are $10 (cash only) for babies who are not on Medicaid. If the baby is due for other routine immunizations, those can be given at the same time at no additional charge.

Babies under 6 months old cannot be given flu vaccine, so their family members and out-of-home caregivers should be vaccinated with either the flu shot or the FluMist nasal spray flu vaccine. That way they won’t give the baby influenza.

Immunizations are available at the Sherman office, 515 N. Walnut, from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays and at the Denison office, 205 N. Houston, from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.

For more information, call the Grayson County Health Department at 903-893-0131 or 903-465-2878.
