WHITE HOUSE (AP) - President Bush says he's chosen a woman of
strength, grace and decency to be "America's face to the world."
With those words, the president named national security adviser
Condoleezza Rice to succeed Colin Powell as secretary of state.
The 50-year-old former academic and adviser to Bush's father has
been one of the president's closest first-term advisers.She told reporters it's "humbling" to imagine succeedingPowell, whom she called a mentor and an "inspirational" secretary of state. The choice must be confirmed by the Senate.
Bush says as a child of the segregated South, Rice understands
the true power of freedom -- and its role in foreign policy.
He says he's glad the football fanatic Rice has again put on
hold her true dream job -- commissioner of the NFL.
