No Sign of Golden Algae in Lake Texoma

Video will be available shortly.

1-20-05 - One year after Golden Algae first appeared in Lake Texoma and killed thousands of fish, the threat appears to have not returned.

Wildlife specialist Bruce Hysmith has been sampling the lake every month since September. His checks have so far found little evidence that the oxygen-starving algae is making a comeback. The biggest clue is the absence of dead fish.

Hysmith says the lake won't be in the clear until March.

Golden Algae thrives in cold temperatures, and its presence last season spurred fears that the lake could suffer with tourists and anglers. But a warm summer killed off the algae. That, combined with a higher lake level of 617 feet, and experts hope it will be enough to keep the algae from returning.
