COLLIN COUNTY, Tex. -- A Sherman mother is in jail charged after leaving her two kids in a vehicle on the side of the highway. Margarita Huerta, from Sherman, has been charged with two counts of endangering a child and abandoning a child.

Lieutenant John Norton of the Collin County Sheriff's Office says Huerta ran out of gas on U.S. Highway 75 just south of Telephone Road in Collin County last Friday and then left her five-year-old and 10-month old in the car while she walked to a nearby gas station.

Lieutenant Norton says after the mother left, the five-year-old ran across the highway into oncoming traffic.

A man stopped to help the child but she was not hurt.

Lieutenant Norton says both are now in Child Protective Services custody.
