It was a day of mourning as law enforcement agencies across Texoma, brought Sheriff Harvey Burkhart home from Norman, Oklahoma.
Burkhart had undergone surgery in Norman to repair a ruptured disc in his neck, when he developed a series of blood clots. He died Saturday morning.
Those who worked with Burkhart said he was the nothing less than professional. Now family and friend are trying to cope with the loss. “There’s no way that this true. It’s just obviously the last thing you want to hear; there is no way something like this could happen to Harvey. He was so strong, so tough, just a good guy everyone loved being around. It's just hard to believe it's true.”
Serving Carter County was a calling for Burkhart. He worked for Oklahoma Gas and Electric for almost 3 decades. During his time at OG&E he also served as a reserve deputy for the Carter County Sheriffs office. After a close election in September 2000, Burkhart won the Sheriffs race.
Representative Greg Piatt said Burkhart made his job look effortless. “He took one of the hardest jobs. You have don’t want to say he made it look easy, he did it so well and so professionally we were so fortunate to have had a Sheriff like Harvey Burkhart.”
Burkhart is survived by his wife and children. He was 58 years old.
