2-25-05 - TYLER, Texas (AP) The self-styled "Rose Capital of the Nation" is in shock today after a shooting rampage that left the gunman and two victims dead and four wounded.

A Tyler man with a history of spousal abuse shot and killed his ex-wife on the Smith County Courthouse steps -- then sprayed the courthouse square with deadly gunfire. A male bystander was killed while trying to stop yesterday's bloody rampage of David Hernandez Arroyo Senior.

Arroyo's son and three law officers were wounded.

After a brief chase, police say they rammed Arroyo's SUV and the gunman stepped out, guns blazing. He was cut down and killed by police gunfire.

Arroyo's attorney says his client was angered over a child support dispute with ex-wife Maribel Estrada. Witnesses say he opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle outside the courthouse, killing her and bystander Mark Alan Wilson, who had tried to stop the bloodshed.

Police say the 43-year-old gunman wore a military flak jacket and a bullet-resistant vest and appeared to have carefully planned his assault.

Smith County Sheriff's Deputy Sherman Dollison is hospitalized in critical condition with four gunshot wounds. David Hernandez Arroyo Junior is hospitalized in fair condition with leg wounds. A sheriff's lieutenant and police detective were treated and released.
