3-2-05 - The former Wapanucka police chief faces three criminal charges for crimes committed while he was on the job.
Johnston County prosecutors filed the charges against John Bynum today – one count of using city money for personal use, one count of grand larceny for stealing money from the evidence room, and another charge for making up a story of an attack – a story that led to a massive manhunt last year.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol began investigating Bynum after suspicions from co-workers and city leaders in Wapanucka. One of his former officers says Bynum’s stories seemed hard to believe at times, including when Bynum said he was attacked and cut by a Hispanic man. That claim led to a manhunt in the Bromide area that turned up nothing, but used up hundreds of hours in law enforcement manpower.
Bynum resigned his post in January, and has since quit the Coal County Sheriff’s Department and just last weekend he resigned from the Caney Police Department.
Bynum has agreed to surrender on Friday morning when he makes his first court appearance.
