Former Chief Hears Charges in Court

3-4-05 – Bond is set at six thousand dollars for a former police chief charged with committing serious crimes on the job. John Bynum surrendered to authorities when he made his first court appearance Friday morning.

Bynum resigned from the Wapanucka Police Department in January. This week, prosecutors charged him with embezzlement, grand larceny and falsely reporting a crime.

Investigators say Bynum made up a story that lead to a manhunt in July, 2004. The former chief claimed a pedestrian cut his arm and took off ran away during questioning. Days of searching turned up nothing.

Authorities also say Bynum stole city funds for personal use and took money from the evidence room.

Bynum is in the Johnston County Jail until he makes bond. A preliminary hearing is set for April 14th.
