1-18-05 – Criminal charges have been filed against a veteran of the Bryan County Sheriff’s Department.
Former detective Mike Overton is charged with one felony count of embezzlement. He was fired in November after investigators say Overton admitted to taking more than $1,000 in cash from the department’s evidence room.
The criminal charge was filed late last week after the results of an OSBI investigation were released.
Bryan County Sheriff Bill Sturch told First News he is saddened by the charges and says Detective Overton was considered a model officer before this incident. The former detective worked at the Sheriff’s office off and on from 1992 until his firing in 2004.
Bryan County District Attorney, Mark Campbell, has recused himself from the case; citing a conflict of interest. The case has been referred to the Carter County District Attorney, Mitch Sperry; who filed the charge.
Mike Overton faced up to five years in prison, if convicted.
