POTTSBORO, Tex. -- A new website is helping Pottsboro parents check on their kids’ progress at school, but how safe is a child's information online? Mystic Matthews spoke with school administrators about ‘K12planet’.

Parents in Pottsboro no longer have to wait to find out how their kids are doing in school. Now, parents can sign on to a website and access grades, attendance, and discipline notices all online.

"What the webpage does is give up-to-date attendance, so if a kid is absent that day it’s marked. We will update weekly grades so we'll have idea what’s going on with grades."

The website is called ‘K12planet’. Pottsboro superintendent Dr. Kyle Collier says the school district has been training teachers for roughly a month. Starting Thursday, the technology department is launching the online service to parents.

June Hendrickson is a parent who works at the school and has already seen some of its benefits.

"I like ‘K12planet’ because I'm able to review my child’s info on nearly an as-it-happens basis."

For parents worried about their children's personal information, school officials at Pottsboro say the site is very secure. Only parents can access their child's information by logging on with a user name and password given to them by the school's technology department.

If you don't have Internet access at home, school officials have provided an alternative way for parents to access the new multimedia tool.

"We know some parents don't have computers and some on the peninsula can't get Internet, so we're going to open the high school library on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5 to 8, so they can come use our technology.”

Hendrickson says it is a great tool for moms and dads to be involved with their kids' education.

“Anyone can go into system and look at it. At work at home at night and it makes it easier to see what your child is doing.”

Dr. Collier say parents are a vital part of making this system, and their kids, successful.

"The system only works when parents are willing to take time look at it and get involved in the kid's education.”
