HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Authorities say they've uncovered a kidnapping plot against the family of comedian David Letterman. Investigators in Montana say they've arrested a man who allegedly planned to kidnap Letterman's young son from the family's ranch.

Authorities say the plot was uncovered after someone who knew
the suspect alerted police. The suspect apparently meant to kidnap
the child and the boy's nanny and hold them for $5 million ransom.

A prisons official says the suspect had been working as a painter at Letterman's property in north-central Montana. State records show the man had received a suspended sentence five years ago on a charge of intimidation.

Two spokesmen for Letterman did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
