4-4-05 - WASHINGTON (AP) An El Paso-born soldier killed in Iraq will receive the first Medal of Honor awarded for gallantry in the Iraq war. The nation's highest honor for military valor will be awarded posthumously to Army Sergeant First Class Paul Smith.
He died engaging Iraqi troops in the fight for control of Baghdad's airport two years ago.
Paul Smith stayed at his gun and beat back an advancing Iraqi force until a bullet took his life.
Smith’s 11-year-old son will accept the award from President Bush on behalf of his father.
