Parents Weigh-in on Sex-Ed

4-5-05 – Parents in Durant are weighing in on the age-old debate: where should kids learn about sex? Monday night, parents stepped into their children’s shoes and listened to a program called “Freedom to Succeed.”

Charlene Ridgeway is one of a dozen parents who decided to hear what student will learn in class Tuesday, "I feel personally they should be taught in the home, but if they're not taught in the home, it’s an avenue where they can be taught."

“Freedom to Succeed” promotes abstinence, but also addresses issues like child support, sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy.

For the last five years, the program has been taught to more than one thousand middle and high school students. There are no other sex education classes offered in the district.

The school offers a parent night to allow parents to ask questions and voice concerns.
