Drill Team Fights to Save Tradition

4-18-05 – A tradition in most local schools is fighting to stay alive in Sherman. The high school’s dance team is urging the mayor and school board members to show more support for the Sherman Hi-Steppers.

The dance team was once made up of 60 members. Today, there are only 12 dancers on the team.

“I think part of the problem has been that we’ve gone through so many directors in the last several years,” said Teresa Dooley, a former Hi-Stepper Director.

The team continues to win trophies at competition, but the teens are asking for more recognition in the hopes that the attention will encourage more young girls to try out.

The Hi-Steppers will go to a school board meeting Monday night to discuss the dance team’s future.

Mayor Julie Ellis-Starr has already asked the school board to consider programs that would reach out to younger students and encourage them to try out for the drill team.
