4-20-05 - Two fatal accidents in Carter County this past week have hit home for a 2nd grade class at Healdton elementary. One week ago a student in the class lost his father in a motorcycle accident. On Monday night, classmate Sierra Shannon was killed in a one-car accident.
But amid the crisis, the class’ teacher is teaching students a new way to cope with grief. The method was developed by the C-Sarah crisis center in Ardmore. They built the plan for schools in order to help students understand grieving.
The children are taught to express their feelings on death through writing and speaking as well as to celebrate the victim's life.
This past week the students have been writing constantly in their journals and released balloons for Sierra during recess.
