4-22-05- Alleged terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui pled guilty in a Virginia federal courtroom Friday. This came just hours after his lawyers argued that he is incompetent to plead guilty.
Moussaoui is charged in a six count indictment in connection with the September 11th terrorism plot. Eight men and women whose family members were killed on 9/11 were invited by the U.S. Attorneys office to sit in on Moussaoui’s hearing.
Moussaoui has called himself "A natural born terrorist and the unique best lawyer." But, his courtroom antics have led to many questions about his sanity.
Earlier this week, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema met with Moussaoui, and determined the defendant is fully competent to plead guilty to the indictment.
It is widely believed that Moussaoui was going to be the 20th hijacker on September 11th. Moussaoui now faces a penalty phase. His lawyers will still try to convince 12 jurors he doesn't deserve to be sentenced to death.
