Denison business gives thousands in scholarships to local students

DENISON, TX - A Denison business is doing their part to help send local graduating seniors to college by giving away more than 30 thousand dollars in scholarships.

"I was really happy." said Katie Whitley.

Durant High School Senior, Katie Whitley says she has one major goal when it comes to college.

"I was really excited because like he said, one of my goals is to graduate college without debt." said Whitley.

Whitley was one of 35 local high school students to receive a 1 thousand dollar scholarship from Ruiz Foods in Denison.

"Over the last five years we have given out over 100,000 in scholarships in the Grayson County community alone." said Tim Neal.

Tim Neal, of Ruiz Foods says this year their scholarship committee reviewed 96 applications.
Each application is looked at for community service, extra curricular activities and academics.

"I won't have to work as much as I would have to if I didn't receive this scholarship." said Jade Ruiz.

"Well obviously it's expensive to go to college, so anything I can get helps, and it'll definitely help pay for tuition and books and housing and things like that." said Audrey Cole.

Neal, has been presenting the scholarships for 4 years now.
He says the best part for him, is seeing the smile on each student's face when he hands them that envelope.

"That's what this is all about, is to give back to the community and help those kids that need it, and that's what makes this a great program and a great organization to work for." said Neal.
