5-18-05 – The work of a local school volunteer has earned recognition from the state of Texas. Larry Clemons, a retired electric worker, started visiting the Finley-Oats Elementary School to spend time with his grandkids. Now, he’s a daily fixture at the Bonham school; greeting every child as they walk through the doors in the mornings.
The Texas State Teachers Association presented The Mickey Leland Memorial Award to Mr. Clemons in front of the entire student body Tuesday morning.
The award honors Texans for outstanding contributions to professional, human and civil rights.
"He's focused on their needs. He is a positive male role model and he does share with them and spends time with them and that's quality and you can't ask for more than that," said Linda Staton, Principal at Finely-Oats Elementary.
Larry Clemons also collects books and school supplies for students.
