Fugitive Search Turns Tragic

6-9-05 – The search for one of the men on the run from Bryan County authorities is over. According to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Kenneth McKinney shot his stepson, and then turned the gun on himself.

McKinney was pronounced dead at his home around ten Thursday morning. His grandson, 34-year-old Stanley McDonald, was taken to the hospital with injuries to his chest and face.

McKinney and a former Achille mayor, John H. Wigington, had been on the run since last Friday. Both men are accused of sex crimes against children.

Wigington contacted Bryan County authorities Thursday morning, he told them he contacted an attorney, but is not willing to turn himself in at this time.

Four years ago, Wigington was the mayor of the small town of 500, but authorities say he and McKinney took part in the sexual abuse of four children, ages 9-16 over a period of five years.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol is using a helicopter to search for Wigington from the sky and officers are on the ground, combing the area surrounding Durant.

If you have any information on the man's whereabouts, contact the Bryan County Sheriff's Office.
