Fireworks Illegal in Some Cities

6-23-05 - Fireworks go on sale tomorrow in Texas and with Oklahoma already selling, police departments are reminding folks to be aware of local laws. In some cities, even possessing fireworks is illegal.

The following is a news release from the Sherman PD.

Independence Day is fast approaching and the Sherman Police Department would like to remind the citizens of the ban of fireworks within the city limits and the strict enforcement that takes place by Sherman Police officers every 4th of July.

This fireworks enforcement will take place between July 1st and July 5th. The amount of patrol personnel in this time period will be increased specifically for the purpose of enforcing the Sherman city fireworks ordnance.

Sherman city ordnance # 3301.1.3 says:
(l) 3301.1.3 Fireworks. The possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling and use of fireworks are prohibited within the city limits of the City of Sherman, Texas or within five thousand (5,000) feet of the city limits.

Sherman police officers are given a zero tolerance directive every 4th of July. Any person caught with fireworks within the city limits of Sherman will have their fireworks seized and may be issued a citation or arrested for the offense. Following the 4th of July holiday all seized fireworks will be destroyed in mass. The fine for possessing fireworks within the city limits of Sherman is $125.00 if found guilty of the offense.

Any citizen of Sherman who would like to report an incident involving fireworks is asked to call the police department at 903-892-7290, not 911. 911 is strictly reserved for emergencies only and should not be used to report fireworks incidents.
