GRAYSON COUNTY, TX -- Grayson County currently has two landfills. County leaders say for now, they are in good shape. As trash continues to build up, that might become a problem. Now officials are doing everything they can to reduce the amount that gets dumped out at the two sites. So far, it’s working.
The recycling bins are full and people keep bringing more, leaving county commissioners to wonder…Where in the world is all the trash coming from?
"Its always amazing you know we have a cleanup every spring and every fall and they're backed up out the gate nearly all day long its just amazing how much people have," says Precinct 1 commissioner Johnny Waldrip.
Over the past couple of week, the recycling bin outside Waldrip’s barn has been a complete success. People line up as early as seven in the morning to drop off their trash...
"Its conserving, I am a conservative person and I think if we could reuse or recycle then its good for us, we're not throwing it away, we're not wasting it," Waldrip says.
That idea has spread to Bonham. City leaders are using a grant provided by the Texoma Council of Governments to build a new recycling center.
"We felt the community needed in terms of increasing our ability to recycle currently there is now central location where you can recycle paper cardboards plastics," says Corby Alexander, Bonham city manager.
Officials say recycling centers, in addition to hazardous waste drop off locations, will help reduce what goes into a landfill by 50%.
Landfills, the one in Luella and the one just eat of Whitesboro, are good sized right now. Residents appreciate the work officials are doing to make sure it stays that way.
"There’s no other place to put it currently, legally and trying to be a little more responsible rather than just pitching stuff in the regular trash," says Michael Parker, a Sherman resident.
"If its not disposed of properly, if you've ever taken a class or been in a stream in the North Texas area you find paint cans tires, things that are basically bad for the environment," Andrew Batay, an Austin College student.
