Suspect Shoots at Deputies; Surrenders

8-7-05 - A Rattan man who shot at Choctaw County sheriff's deputies during a seven-hour stand-off Saturday night surrendered peacefully to authorities.

Authorities say 35 year old Donald Wayne Burkham is in the Choctaw County jail facing at least five counts of shooting with intent to kill.

Choctaw County Sheriff Lewis Collins says Burkham shot at his father, mother and sister, then took off in the family car. He barricaded himself inside his home around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and refused to answer his phone or negotiate with deputies. Just after 5:00 p.m., Sheriff Collins says Burkham walked out of his house and fired three rounds at deputies from a high powered rifle. No officers were hit, but they did return fire. Burkham reportedly ran back inside his home just off of Highway 93 about three miles south of Rattan.

The OHP tactical team was called out to assist. Around 9:30 p.m., Burkham surrendered peacefully to authorities.
