8-14-05 - A Bells, Texas man and his three children are dead following a fiery crash on Highway 82 Saturday evening between Sherman and Bells. Investigators say a trailer came off a truck and slammed into their vehicle, then caught fire.
Grayson County DPS Trooper Kevin Galyan says 52-year-old Thomas Moore and his three children, 11-year-old Mary Katherine, nine-year-old Alicynne Denise, and seven-year-old Jacob Thomas Dall were headed home from dinner at IHOP in Sherman when their car was hit by the trailer. Their Ford Tempo exploded on impact, and all four were killed immediately.
Moore had been an employee at Hutchins Plumbing in Sherman for 16 years. All three of his children attended Bells schools.
The Moore family was headed east on Highway 82, and the truck pulling the trailer was going west when the trailer somehow came unhitched and struck the vehicle head-on.
The driver of the diesel truck, 26-year-old William Alexander Penate of Kauffman, Texas, works for Statewide Transport and Set-Up Service out of Dallas. Troopers say they are a mobile home moving company.
Investigators are pouring over evidence at the crash sight, including the hitch from the truck to see how the trailer might have come loose.
The first call came in around 8:35 p.m. Saturday night. The accident happened between Craft Road and Smith Oak Road on Highway 82.
