7-25-05 - In about four months, Durant will be home to the first bio-diesel fuel plant in Oklahoma. Earth Bio-Fuels is busy preparing their future site, which will drastically change Durant's skyline and history.
Grain silos that were brought to Durant in the early 1900s by the Kimbell family, a name famous for the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, will be the future home of a bio-disel plant. The mill has changed hands twice and for the past couple years, sat empty.
While Durant is losing a landmark, the plant will offer over 100 new jobs and help local businesses. It will generate 10 million gallons of fuel per year. The fuel is made from vegetable oils such as soybean oil and blended with petroleum diesel to create a much cleaner and environmentally safe fuel. Business is expected to start up late this year.
