9-28-05 - One highway in Carter County is becomming a deadly streatch of road.
A head on collision on Highway 199 Wednesday morning claims the life of one local woman and injuries two others while less than a mile away is where another head on collision killed Dickson cheerleader Jordan Page less than two weeks ago.
Wednesday's accident involved two drivers hitting head on causing one car to catch on fire. 46-year-old Rhonda Tanner was pronounced dead at Mercy Memorial Hospital from severe internal injuries, crushed legs and third degree burns.
Her sister, Donna Stewart, 44, also of Lone Grove, was flown to Norman Wednesday afternoon. They both had to be cut out of the care after it caught on fire.
The other vehicle was an SUV driven by John Sullivan, 57, of Sullivan Insurance. Sullivan was airlifted to Oklahoma City with hip and leg injuries.
"It appears that the white car was westbound and the SUV was eastbound," Oklahoma Highway Trooper Rocky Northcutt said. "The white car went left of center and hit head on with the SUV."
Dickson police say it appears the women were trying to pass in a no-passing zone. Neither were wearing their seatbelts.
Highway 199 will be safer in a few years when ODOT gets the funds and plans to expand it to five lanes.
