8-3-05 - A former East Central University football player testified from a wheelchair Wednesday in Ada in the murder trial of a man accused of paralyzing him and killing a teammate in a hit-and-run incident last September.
Dennis Scales was wheeled into the courtroom on a gurney and
attached to oxygen during his brief testimony in the 1st degree murder trial of Ammon Reich.
Reich is accused of chasing a pickup truck Scales and Joseph Tusan was riding in, then ramming it with his own pickup and causing the truck to roll. Tusan of Arlington, Texas, was killed and Scales of Mannsfield, Texas, is now a quadriplegic.
Scales says he can't move and requires around-the-clock care. He
admitted under cross-examination that he and Tusan smoked marijuana
before the incident.
Prosecutors say Reich began chasing the truck after a racially charged argument with the group Scales and Tusan were with.
