10-15-05 - Union Pacific officials say a chemical-laden tanker car that derailed and exploded in a ball of fire in an Arkansas switchyard today will be allowed to burn itself out.
Railroad officials say it will take until early tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, a police spokesman in Texarkana says the fire in the
propylene tank is under control and the smoke has thinned out. And
police have canceled an evacuation order.
The derailment and explosion killed one person and forced the
evacuation of hundreds of homes. Police say at least two homes were
destroyed and several vehicles were totaled.
The switchyard also serves Kansas City Southern and Amtrak. And
an Amtrak spokesman says the damage will likely mean delays for
Amtrak's Texas Eagle until the site is cleaned up.
