Carter County Mother Charged in Infant's Death

10-20-05 - Laura Renteria made her initial appearance Thursday in Carter County and learned her charges were upgraded to first degree murder.

Renteria, 20, spoke to the judge through closed circuit TV from the detention center. She was first arrested Tuesday for unreasonable force upon a child, but later that day her 3-month-old son died.

The district attorney said the new charge fits the crime.

The story began Sunday when Renteria took her son to Mercy Memorial Hospital because he wouldn't wake up. Doctors in Oklahoma City soon learned after a brain scan he had shaken baby syndrome.

Renteria admitted to authorities she not only slapped the infant but shook him for about one minute because he wouldn't stop crying.

"It's just a really hard case especially for me as a father it just keeps going through my mind," Assistant District Attorney Craig Ladd said.

Renteria is now being held in the Carter County Jail on a $1 million bond, and her preliminary hearing is set for December 20th.

The infant's father is in the military and has been helping with the hurricane relief effort in Louisiana.
